  • Who is required to go through the New Supervisor Onboarding Program (NSOP)?

NSOP is required for all new people leaders at SoCalGas, whether hired externally or promoted. NSOP (or its predecessor Essentials of Supervision (EOS)) is also a prerequisite for Leadership Training Camp, so if you have completed neither NSOP nor EOS, have been a people leader for less than 3 years, and wish to be eligible to attend Camp, email SoCalGasU@semprautilities.com to be added to the NSOP waitlist.

  • How long does the New Supervisor Onboarding Program (NSOP) take to complete?

NSOP will take approximately 5 months, but the majority of the training classes (E-Learnings and virtual Instructor-Led Trainings) should be completed within the first 3 months. The Manager Check-Ins will continue for the rest of the program.

In that 5 month timespan, new supervisors can expect to spend about 25 hours total on NSOP activities, including 14 hours for webinars, 4 - 5 hours for eLearning, and 6 - 9 hours for Manager Check-Ins. Managers can expect to spend 6 - 9 hours for Manager Check-In conversations with their new supervisors over the course of those 5 months.

  • Who do I talk to about my progress?

We encourage you to talk with your direct manager about your development as a leader, especially if you have questions or concerns about your role. For specific questions about the program, you can email SoCalGasU@semprautilities.com.

  • What if I can't make it to my orientation?

It's important that you go to the first orientation available after you become a supervisor, so that you get all the important information about your new role. However, if you absolutely cannot make it, you can register for the next month's orientation instead.

  • How do I see my transcript?

You can track your progress through NSOP on the My Transcript page of the Learning Module.

  • When do I go to Leadership Training Camp?

NSOP is the prerequisite for Leadership Training Camp. Once you have successfully completed NSOP, you are put on a waiting list for Camp, which is recommended for leaders who have been supervisors for at least a year.

  • I'm a manager of a new supervisor, but they weren't automatically enrolled in this program - what should I do?

First, make sure they qualify for the program. This program is designed for leaders who have active direct reports. Also, make sure the change has already taken place in the system. They won't be auto-enrolled until their promotion shows up in the org chart and Outlook. If they still aren't auto-enrolled, just email SoCalGasU@semprautilities.com, and we can add your supervisor right away!

  • I'm a manager of a new supervisor who came on board before this new program launched. Can they still participate?

Yes, we can manually add them to a cohort so they can still get the benefit of the full NSOP program. Simply email their name to SoCalGasU@semprautilities.com, and we will add them to the waitlist. The supervisor will receive a welcome email when they have been enrolled.

(Note: Priority is given to brand new supervisors, but we will get your supervisor in as soon as we can!)

  • I was enrolled in the old program (Essentials of Supervision) but now the courses are inactive. How do I complete my training?

The EOS courses are now inactive because they contain out-of-date information and technology that doesn't work reliably. So, you'll need to complete NSOP instead. Email SoCalGasU@semprautilities.com to be added to the wait list.

(Note: If you have been a people leader for 3+ years, you may qualify to be exempted. Email SoCalGasU@semprautilities.com with your specific concern.)

  • I have supervisors (or other people leaders) on my team who could benefit from some of these courses. Do they need to enroll in the full 5 month program?

Good news - the self paced NSOP courses are available for all leaders to take as "stand alone" courses. We encourage all leaders to refresh their knowledge by taking these updated courses. You can access the list of courses here. To enroll in a stand-alone course, simply search for the name of the course in My Learning. You can either enroll yourself, or assign it to a direct report.

  • What should I do if I believe I ve been assigned the New Supervisor Onboarding Program (NSOP) in error?

This program is intended for newly hired or promoted people leaders. If you have already been a people leader for 3+ years, have previously completed Essentials of Supervision, or have other exempting circumstances, please reach out to SoCalGasU@semprautilities.com.
